Experience the Wonder of Maldives

The Maldives is a magical group of 1,200 islands in the Indian ocean, all formed from the peaks of underwater volcanoes. From the air, each island looks like a turquoise circle with a halo around it. These halos are barrier reefs that protect the islands from monsoons and other storms. In this part of the world, there are only 2 seasons, wet and dry. The best time to go is during the dry season, which goes from December to March. Other things to consider when booking a trip to the Maldives include wind conditions, hotel prices, and airfare.

Water Sports

Do you love kitesurfing? Then, you’ll want to head to the Maldives during the dry season or between May and October. This is when the winds are at their strongest. If you need a break from the islands, you can also head to Sri Lanka during the same time period for similar wind conditions. For other water sports that require less wind, like snorkeling and paddle boarding, the best times are in March, April and November. That’s when you’ll experience smooth, glass-like water conditions.

Wildlife Encounters

Wildlife and coral reefs are abundant in the Maldives. Chances are, you’ll have more than just a handful of encounters with sea turtles, whale sharks, and other sea creatures. Set out on your own or join a tour group. Don’t want to get wet? Book a submarine tour and stay in your dry clothes while swimming with the fish!

Accommodations

There are accommodations ranging from $60 a night to over $2,500 a night. Stay on any island of your choice, though you’ll fly into one of two airports. From there, a speedboat ride is the easiest way to get to your hotel. Of course, for those who want to go big, there are also yacht charters, because who doesn’t want to make that trip in the comfort of a private yacht!

Maxin’ and Relaxin’

Aside from the countless beaches and water activities, you can spend time pampering yourself at one of the many spas. One of the coolest ones is a spa called Huvafen Fushi Underwater Spa & Resort. If you’re a guest there, you’ll have your own bungalow, along with access to all the amenities. Book a treatment at the spa and experience a massage surrounded by sea creatures. The name says it all, underwater spa means that the spa is, in fact, underwater.

Plane Tickets

Airfare to the Maldives isn’t cheap and there are no non-stop flights from the US. To make sure all the traveling doesn’t wear you out, book a flight to a major city in Asia, like Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Take a few days to explore the city and to adjust to the time zone. Then, your trip to the Maldives will not only be shorter, but it’ll also be cheaper. Services such as Google Flight and Kayak let you book multi-city trips, so they are great sites to start your planning.

Finally, remember that whatever you take to the beaches or reefs in the Maldives, you’ll need to bring back with you. Traveling opens our world, but it’s also important to remember to leave the ecosystem as untouched as possible. The last thing anyone wants is for the beaches to close and the reefs to die due to over-tourism.
