Last week, reps for Jada Pinkett Smith responded to allegations that her husband, actor Will Smith, had given his “blessing” to rapper August Alsina to sleep with her. At the time, Jada’s official statement was that it was “absolutely not true.”
But on Friday, Jada invited Will onto her online talk show, Red Table Talks, to discuss the rumors. As it turns out, Alsina’s recollection about “permission” may not be true.
Jada’s series, Red Table Talks, is famous for its raw, in-depth, and often emotional conversations. The recent episode was no exception. The actress invited her husband onto the show to specifically address the rumors that she had a fling with August Alsina, the 27-year-old rapper who is twenty years her minor.
“It’s a situation that I consider private,” Jada said on Friday’s show. “This is a very personal journey that became very public.”
“Four and a half years ago,” she continued, “I started a friendship with August and we actually became really, really good friends.” She then explained that at the time, her marriage to Will was on the brink.
“I was done with you,” Will agreed, laughing. “Marriages have that, though.”
“We broke up,” Jada said. “We decided that we were going to separate for a period of time.” She continued to explain that “From there, as time went on, I got into a different kind of entanglement with August.”
The Smiths had been a sort of surrogate family to August, who is closer in age to their son Jaden. In the beginning of the Red Table Talk, Will and Jada agree that they were both concerned about August’s mental health when he entered their lives. Jada wanted to take care of him. But their relationship became a lot more personal during her separation from Will.
Jada’s Permission to Give
The part of the story that the Smiths were most eager to clarify was the suggestion that Will had somehow given his “blessing” to August to pursue Jada. That’s the part of the story Jada rejects.
“The only person that can give permission in that particular circumstance is myself,” she said on Red Table Talks. In other words, while the affair was not a betrayal of Will since the two were already split up, it was not up to him to approve of Jada’s choices. She was the one who decided to have the relationship with Alsina.
Eventually, Jada says, August broke off the affair. And after some time, she and Will made amends, resuming their marriage. They claim that their partnership is strong today, but that it took work to get to that place. The couple have been married since 1997, and have two children together.
